Reviews of Golf Club Sets for Intermediate Players
Our Top Picks
What is an intermediate golfer? Generally speaking, intermediate golfers (also known as mid-handicap golfers, or mid-handicappers) regularly shoot between 85 and 105 in a full 18-hole round of golf. They are starting to get more consistent in their ball striking and at direction control. They also are starting to zero in on the distance range of each club. At this point, it is common for an average golfer’s golf clubs (often their first set) to be holding them back.
As the skill-level increases, focus begins to shift from being all about hitting the ball cleanly to focusing on other things, such as distance and feel. This shift in focus usually requires a set of golf clubs with different features. A first timer’s clubs should be all about forgiveness, making it as easy as possible to hit the ball cleanly. Forgiveness is still important for intermediate players, but less forgiveness is required. These players are usually looking for more distance and control.
The perfect intermediate golf club set will still provide some forgiveness, while also providing the ability to hit farther, more accurate shots through distance and feel. After testing dozens of sets, we have determined what we think is the best all around intermediate set of clubs, the set of mid-handicapper clubs that provide the best value (very affordable while still doing a great job), and the best set for those wanting to really elevate their game as quickly as possible.

All Around Best Golf Cub Set for Intermediate Players
Callaway Strata Ultimate 16-Piece Golf Set
Review
This set includes 11 clubs: driver, 3-wood, 4 and 5 hybrid, 6 through 9 irons, pitching wedge, sand wedge, and putter. Also included is a stand bag and 4 head covers. The full-size titanium driver and the 3-wood gave us good, consistent distance in our testing. The hybrid clubs were easy to hit from both the fairway and the rough.
The irons offered good forgiveness, and they had really good feel, which is something we start to look for in intermediate clubs. The wedges provided us with great feel and control and were definitely a highlight in this set. We also really liked how consistent the swing and striking the ball with the putter felt. The quality of this set really stood out in our testing. We like the solid construction and feel this set provides, and the overall performance is what makes this our top pick for complete sets for intermediate players.

Wilson Profile SGI Complete Golf Set 14-Piece
Review
The Wilson Profile SGI set includes 10 clubs: driver, fairway wood, hybrid, 6 through 9 irons, pitching wedge, sand wedge, and putter. Also comes with a stand bag and 3 head covers. The driver and wood provided solid contact and pretty good distance. The hybrid was excellent – our favorite club in this set; the ball got up fast and carried really nicely.
The irons were well balanced and had good feel on impact. The putter had a nice feel and gave us nothing to complain about. This is quite a good little set that packs a punch for the price. We were impressed with the overall performance of these clubs and in our opinion, you won’t find a better value for the quality you get with this set.

Cobra Men’s XL Speed Golf Set
Review
The Cobra XL Speed golf set is for those intermediate players who are looking to really elevate their game quickly with a club that will easily keep up as they get more and more advanced. This set includes 12 clubs: driver, 3-wood, 5-wood, 4-hybrid, 5-hybrid, 6 through 9 irons, pitching wedge, sand wedge, and putter. Also included is a high-quality cart bag.
The drivers and woods were really solid at impact with a large sweet spot. They also consistently delivered really good distance. The irons had great feel, while also providing plenty of forgiveness. The wedges provided equally good feel and excellent touch for those approaches around the green. The putter had a really smooth feel throughout the swing and through contact with the ball.
This Cobra set may be the best combination of forgiveness and feel we tested. (Typically forgiveness and feel have an inverse relationship – as you increase one, there is a decline in the other) This is what makes this set great for intermediate players, and able to keep up with golfers as they get more and more advanced.
